CHP Uses Taser Gun on Man Running on 880

California Highway Patrol officers used a Taser gun to subdue a man who ran across lanes of Interstate Highway 880 after a crash in Hayward Wednesday morning.

CHP Sgt. Trent Cross says the crash happened at about 6:45 a.m. just north of Whipple Road, following reports of a man driving erratically on the freeway. Cross says the man hit another car before overturning his pickup truck.

"Anytime you have someone in the lanes of freeway traffic that's traveling about 65 miles per hour, they risk fatal injuries, so we're very fortunate that this person wasn't hit, and we were able to take them into custody before they were struck by a vehicle," said Cross.

Arriving officers found the driver of the crashed red pickup running from his vehicle and into lanes of traffic on the freeway. Cross says a Taser was used on the man after he resisted officers' efforts to take him into custody.

He says the man suffered minor injuries from the crash.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but authorities say the driver could be facing felony hit and run and driving under the influence charges.

The driver of the other car involved in the crash also suffered minor injuries.
