Cattle Drive Through Downtown Santa Rosa

SONOMA (CBS SF / AP) -- People heading to downtown Santa Rosa Sunday morning will have a chance to witness a tradition usually associated with the Wild West.

A team of professional wranglers will be herding about 40 cattle through the streets of the city's downtown to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The cattle, mostly Texas longhorns, are trained for cattle drives. They'll be herded to the fairgrounds as part of a reenactment of the area's history.

The cattle drive is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.

Officials are taking steps so that there's no repeat of a cattle drive in Napa in 1994 that ended in a stampede. The Press Democrat says that ill-fated drive ended with several police cars being damaged.

For Sunday's cattle drive, Santa Rosa police will be closing some downtown streets to traffic, while barricades will be in place to keep the cattle away from spectators.
