California Proposal Would Create Fines For Calling, Texting On A Bike

SACRAMENTO (CBS 5) - Lawmakers are considering a fine to prevent distracted cycling on California streets.

A bill up for debate in the California Senate Transportation Committee would make bike riders subject to fines similar to those imposed on drivers who are caught using a mobile device behind the wheel.

Palo Alto State Sen. Joe Simitian authored the 2008 California ban on operating cellphones while driving without the use of hands-free technology. His new proposal would allow officers to fine cyclist caught talking or texting with a $20 fine.

The fine only a fraction of those faced by drivers, largely because additional local fees have not been added on to the citations.
