Breastfeeding 'Pods' Installed At Oakland Airport

OAKLAND (KCBS) -- Oakland International has become the first airport in the state to buy and install free-standing pods specifically designed for breastfeeding mothers.

The lactation stations give mothers a place to pump breast milk or feed their babies.

"It's very cozy, it's lighted, it's clean, and spacious," Oakland International Airport spokeswoman Keonnis Taylor said of the pods.

The pods are about five feet by ten feet wide, and feature a bench seat, mirrors, electrical outlets, and a lockable door.

"Having this space is really important for us because it gives attention to the positive health principle of breastfeeding," Taylor said.

Each of the suites, which are ADA compatible, costs $18,000, and are developed by Vermont-based Mamava.

Oakland International has installed two of the pods so far and is one of 11 airports which offers Mamava pods. The San Francisco 49ers have recently ordered four of the pods for Levi's Stadium.

The nursing suites are also found in schools, malls and conventions centers across the country.
