BART Passengers Trapped Between Trains, Platforms
WALNUT CREEK (CBS 5 / BCN) -- Two people apparently became trapped between Bay Area Rapid Transit trains and station platforms Saturday evening after slipping due to heavy rain.
In one case, witnesses said a man at the Walnut Creek station had to be rescued by firefighters using the so-called "Jaws of Life."
"The jaws cut into a small area of the train like a can opener," said eyewitness Craig Cannon.
He indicated that firefighters had trouble getting to the victim for a time as crowds blocked the way until police arrived to clear them away.
BART spokesman Linton Johnson said the man's leg and foot got stuck between the train and platform while the train was still moving about 6 p.m.
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials indicated the man was transported to a Kaiser center in Walnut Creek and appeared to be in stable condition.
A similar accident reportedly happened about the same time at the Lafayette BART station, but that man was able to free himself.
There were major delays on the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART line for a portion of Saturday evening because of the incidents.
