Naked Man Shot By San Jose Police After Vehicle Pursuit
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Police in the South Bay Friday afternoon are investigating an officer-involved shooting of a naked man who was acting strangely before fleeing from authorities, a department spokesperson said.
San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia confirmed Friday that at around 1:30 p.m., the department received a call from a person reporting a naked man behaving erratically.
Police arrived at the scene and tried to contact the subject, but the man fled in a vehicle.
The vehicle pursuit started near Hamilton Avenue and San Tomas Aquino Road. During the initial pursuit, the suspect had a collision with another citizen's car and sustained damage that partially disabled his vehicle, but he continued driving.
The pursuit proceeded toward Stevens Creek Boulevard, where it ended in the area of 5146 Stevens Creek where there was a report of shots fired.
Garcia said police tried to stop the suspect. When the suspect refused to stop, Garcia said that multiple officers fired at the suspect.
Garcia said the suspect was struck at least once. He was transported to a local hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries.
No officers were shot or injured in the incident.
Video shot by Chopper 5 showed upwards of two dozen SJPD patrol cars at the scene. Two officer SUV were stopped in front of and behind the suspect vehicle, a dark blue Dodge Ram pickup truck in the entrance to the parking lot to a Safeway store on Stevens Creek.
The right front tire of the truck was gone and apparently came off during the pursuit.
There were numerous evidence markers placed in the street.
Authorities did not say what initiated the pursuit or why the officer shot the suspect.
Medical personnel were responding to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. The suspect is in custody and is being treated at the scene.
The Stevens Creek off-ramp to northbound I-280 has been shut down for the investigation.
Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation into the incident and the officer-involved shooting.
