7-Alarm Grass Fire Burning Near Fairfield

SOLANO COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Firefighters are battling a seven-alarm grass fire in the Cordelia area just outside of Fairfield.

The fire began 4:10 p.m. Monday and is near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Interstate 680.

Fairfield Fire Marshall Morgana Yahnke said the fire is east of the intersection of Central Place and Pittman Road and that 16 to 20 mph winds were pushing the fire eastward toward open space and dense vegetation, so no structures were threatened as of 5:30 p.m.

However, she said that there has been some preparation for structure protection in several areas.

Motorists are advised that the California Highway Patrol has closed the Cordelia Road exit from I-680 because of drift smoke over the roadway.

The Fairfield Fire Department has been receiving assistance from surrounding agencies including Cal Fire, which is better equipped to handle vegetation fires.

The fire initially was a two-alarm fire.
