4 Officers, Teenager Hurt In Confrontation Near Santa Rosa School

SANTA ROSA (BCN) - Three Santa Rosa police officers and a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy were injured Thursday morning in a confrontation with a teen near Elsie Allen High School, a police lieutenant said.

The 17-year-old boy also suffered bumps, bruises and abrasions, Lt. Steve Bair said.

The boy was reported missing late Wednesday or early Thursday morning by his grandparents, who said he had mental health issues, Bair said.

A sheriff's deputy who took the missing person's report was among those injured in the subsequent confrontation, Bair said.

Two Santa Rosa police officers responded around 5 a.m. to a report about a suspicious person on Burgess Drive in Santa Rosa near Elsie Allen High School, located at 599 Bellevue Ave., Bair said.

When they contacted the teen, he attacked the two officers, Bair said.

The officers called for backup, and a Santa Rosa police sergeant and two sheriff's deputies responded, Bair said.

The teen did not comply with the officers' orders and fought aggressively until he was subdued with a Taser, pepper spray and a baton, Bair said.

"He is a big kid," Bair said.

The teen was handcuffed, put in leg restraints, and taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for observation. He faces charges of resisting arrest and assault on four officers, Bair said.

One Santa Rosa police officer suffered a knee injury, while another officer reported neck and shoulder pain. A police sergeant complained of back pain, Bair said.

The sheriff's deputy suffered a hand injury, Bair said. All four went to hospitals for treatment.

Bair said police are also investigating a report the teen had a pocket knife, and are looking into whether he was on medication.

The confrontation was over by 5:30 a.m., but vehicle traffic around the high school was diverted. Students were allowed to walk to school, Bair said.
