Hwy 17 Lanes Reopen After 2-Alarm Grass Fire Burns In Santa Cruz Mountains

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) -- A two-alarm vegetation fire prompted the closure of a portion of Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains for over two hours, authorities said Tuesday.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department said the fire was reported near the area of Highway 17 and Idylwild Road shortly before 4 p.m.

Just before 5 p.m., the fire department said forward progress of the fire had been stopped, and no structures were threatened.

Officials said both directions of the highway would be closed for two hours, however, northbound lanes were reopened at around 5:30 p.m.

The left lane of southbound Highway 17 at Redwood Estates reopened shortly after 6 p.m. All lanes were reopened as of shortly before 7 p.m.

The duration of this incident was 2 hours and 18 minutes. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
