1.7 Million Pound Bay Bridge Truss Being Removed, Recycled

KCBS_740OAKLAND (KCBS) -- The recycling of the old Bay Bridge continues Tuesday with the removal of a massive steel truss.

It takes as much planning and design to demolish a bridge as it does to build one, according to Bay Bridge spokeswoman Leah Robinson-Leach.

She's watching a 1.7 million pound piece of the old span be sectioned off, and carefully lowered to a barge to be taken to Oakland for recycling.

"It is going to take us through 2018 to bring down all of the 288-foot trusses. This is the fourth. We will have 10 left to do over the course of the next few years," Robinson-Leach told KCBS.

Caltrans is recording all of this, so at the end, a time-lapse video of the old bridge disappearing and the views of Oakland opening up will be available to watch.

For now, the public can follow a live stream of each truss removal on YouTube by clicking here. The channel is called Bay Bridge Demo.
