The Detroit Lions played on Thanksgiving before 24 of the current NFL franchises even existed. The Lions' first owner scheduled the inaugural game in 1934 to try and generate interest in the team.
The 49ers and Seahawks face Thursday and there is plenty to talk as this game is as big as it gets for a regular season meeting. During the game there will be several key matchups that should produce some must-see-television.
Right now, the Oakland Raiders are 1-10, and if the season ended today, they'd get the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. There's not a clear-cut stud or even a lot of depth at the top of the draft next year, so the Silver & Black need to be very smart about their next draft.
Omri Casspi also scored 22 for Sacramento, which has won three in a row. Casspi, who made his first start of the season in place of the injured Rudy Gay, was with New Orleans for a brief stretch this offseason before being released in a salary-cap move.
Kings coach Michael Malone said Gay's injury has bothered the forward enough that the team will likely rest him for a couple of days before evaluating his progress.
With Thanksgiving upon us, we should all take some time to think about what we are thankful for. There is plenty of drama to pay attention to this weekend, and that is something every college football fan can be thankful for.
When the 49ers and Seahawks square off Thursday it could mean the end of one of the two's playoff chances. While neither will be technically eliminated, the loser will essentially need to win out, which is a tough task when considering the two teams remaining schedules.
The 4-7 St. Louis Rams may seem to be weak at first glance, but as coached by long-time NFL man Jeff Fisher, the team once referred to as the "Lambs" is anything but right now. Remember, St. Louis has wins over Denver, San Francisco and Seattle this year—and they almost beat San Diego last weekend with a third-string quarterback. They're still good.
