Yuba City to build new plaza under iconic water tower

YUBA CITY — A new plan is underway to turn an iconic site in Yuba City into something more. The city is now accepting bids to build a new plaza beneath the water tower.

The project to revamp the space is expected to break ground later this year. With $2 million in funding from Caltrans, Yuba City plans to create a park-like atmosphere with play structures, a plaza, an amphitheatre, local art and more.

"It's a clean grant, so it helps just clean up the whole area with a safe and inviting environment for our residents to come and enjoy," Mayor Dave Shaw said.

The city says the historic water tower is playing a pivotal role in the project. They hope its central location can combine the past with the future.

"That water tower was there when the downtown was formed and our first fire station was located right below the water tower," Mayor Shaw said. "So that's why we're keeping that it's a beacon that welcomes people to the downtown."

The mayor says that with there being an amphitheatre, open-air concerts are a possibility. He says the project is family and community-focused.

"They can go to Plumas Street and have dinner, and then they can go spend some time at the park and vice versa," Mayor Shaw said.

The city says the Water Tower Plaza could be complete as soon as next spring or summer.
