Man arrested after fatal crash following domestic violence incident in Yuba City

A domestic violence investigation in Yuba City escalated into a crash and foot chase Wednesday afternoon, ending with the arrest of a man and the death of another individual.

The Yuba City Police Department said that officers responded just before 1 p.m. to a domestic violence call on Rickey Drive. When officers arrived, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Marco Hernandez-Mora, had already fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting law enforcement to issue an alert for the surrounding area.

About a half hour later, a Sutter County sheriff's deputy spotted Hernandez-Mora driving eastbound on Franklin Road near Harding Avenue. Before the deputy could attempt a traffic stop, Hernandez-Mora began driving erratically and entered the westbound lanes, authorities said.

Moments later, police said Hernandez-Mora collided with another vehicle on Franklin Road, lost control and then crashed into a tree. Hernandez-Mora then fled the scene on foot but was located and arrested shortly afterward on Hunji Drive by Yuba City police officers and Sutter County deputies.

Other first responders had gone to the crash site and located an unresponsive man in the backseat of Hernandez-Mora's vehicle, police said. Despite life-saving efforts, that man was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries suffered in the crash. His identity has not yet been released.

Hernandez-Mora was taken to an area hospital for treatment and remains in custody for suspected domestic violence, police said. Authorities say he may face additional charges related to the crash and death.

Sutter County authorities urged people to stay out of the area temporarily. Residents in the area were also told to shelter in place while the scene was active.
