Woman Reportedly Attacked By Man With Medieval Club In Sacramento County

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) - A woman was seriously injured by a man who allegedly attacked her with a spiked medieval-type club or mace in Sacramento County on Monday morning.

At around 4:15 a.m., a deputy was driving near on Garfield Avenue near Auburn Boulevard in Sacramento County when he said he heard screams and went to investigate.

When the deputy arrived at the scene, he found a man and a woman lying in the roadway. The woman was suffering from serious wounds to the back of her head that were reportedly caused when the man hit her with a mace, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Sgt. Lisa Bowman.

Deputies found the mace lying nearby.

The woman says she was walking to her boyfriend's house and was carrying her dog when the 34-year-old suspect -- a transient -- suddenly came up from behind and said he was going to kill her. He reportedly attacked dog with the mace. The woman ran off, but was caught by the man who allegedly also beat her with the mace.

The victim was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Travis Lanning has been arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem.

Bowman says the dog was later found alive.

It was checked out by a veterinarian and appears to be OK although it has a lesion on its back which may or may not be related to this morning's incident. Deputies are trying to locate the person who found the dog and turned it over to authorities.

Editor's note: A previous version of the story reported the woman was a transient.
