White House Expected To Unveil School Transgender Restroom Notice
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The White House is expected to tell every public school in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms they feel comfortable in.
"What I've learned from my kids is they look at anybody as a human being and I think that's what we need to start doing," said parent Jennifer McKinney.
In a move drawing fresh criticism, locals are divided on a new presidential notice allowing transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity at all public schools in the United States.
"Preventing people from using whatever damn bathroom they want is a waste of our time," said Nic Niggemeyer.
The new directive isn't a law, but the message to districts is clear—fall in line or face the loss of federal funding.
A letter will go out on Friday describing what schools should do to ensure none of their students are discriminated against. While the decree doesn't sit well with some parents, others call it a progressive step that promotes acceptance.
"I think to each their own and we should learn from the kids. They're more accepting of things because it's part of their everyday curriculum," McKinney said.
In California, the School Success and Opportunity Act became law in 2014, ensuring transgender bathroom access. UC Davis made the transition after a call from the president of the UC school system.
