What To Consider When Recarpeting A Room In Sacramento

One of the largest investments you can make in a home is the flooring, and carpet is one of the more popular choices among Sacramento homeowners. The lifespan of standard carpets is 10 to 20 years, but could be shorter depending on the quality of the carpet, if you have children or pets and the amount of traffic in the home. Whether looking to update the look and feel of your home, increase the value and help stage it for selling or freshen up your home for spring, replacing the carpet can be a big task. Here are some things to consider before you get started.

Appearance
If your carpet is less than nine years old and in relatively good condition - free of major stains or blemishes and minor rippling - then you may be able to simply have the carpet cleaned and re-stretched. This is a good option if your budget doesn't allow for a full replacement, as the average cost for new carpet in Sacramento is $2 to $6 per square foot or $4,000 to $6,000 for an entire house. Professional carpet cleaners can remove most stains, and simple repairs can be done using remnants of existing carpet to fix burns or stubborn pet stains.

Padding
When deciding if an existing carpet needs to be replaced, one way to quickly test the condition is by walking over it. If you hear crackling or notice it's uneven or worn in places, it may be time to change the padding as well. Since untreated stains can seep into padding and cause odors, mold and mildew, it is important to have the padding checked carefully to determine if it needs replacement. If your carpet is in good condition, you may be able to change just the padding, but check with a professional as this is not an easy thing to do yourself.

Wearability
If you have young children and/or pets in the home, there are added considerations when replacing the carpet. Make sure you look for a carpet that is durable enough to withstand high traffic and easy staining. However, ensure it is also soft and well-padded for lasting comfort. If you have pets, Berber is a great option because the short bristles make it easier to clean.

Decor
When choosing new carpet, consider the decor of the entire house rather than just an individual room. Even if you have carpet in only a few rooms, sticking with one color and texture enhances the flow and keeps the overall design simple. Neutral colors such as gray, tan or beige go well with most wall colors. Sacramento makes for frequent outdoor activity and often muddy shoes returning home. Berber carpet offers patterns that can hide many stains and pet hair, while giving a room a polished look.
