Video Of Tracy Teen's Escape Released
TRACY, Calif. (CBS13) -- The dramatic surveillance video of a 16-year-old boy running to a Tracy health club for help after escaping from a year of torture has finally been released following the conviction of the last suspect in the case.
The footage shows the emaciated, dirty and bruised teen shuffling quickly into the front lobby of the club and asking employees for help, holding one end of a padlocked chain that was still wrapped around his ankle.
The teen begged to be hidden and said he was afraid his captors were looking for him.
The video was one of the key pieces of evidence that helped convict Anthony Waiters of nine charges, including torture.
Waiters was convicted last week of frequently visiting the Tracy home where the teen was held captive between 2007 and 2008. The victim testified that Waiters helped brutally torture him; cutting him, lighting his pants on fire and beating him unconscious.
"They cut my arm and poured bleach on it. It burned," he testified, showing jurors his scars.
When the teen walked into the health club, he only weighed about 100 pounds.
Michael Schumacher; Schumacher' wife, Kelly Layne Lau; and the teen's then-legal guardian, Caren Ramirez, all pleaded guilty and could face at least 30 years in prison. Waiters is scheduled to be sentenced on January 18.
