VACAVILLE — A K-9 officer with the Vacaville Police Department is making a slow but steady recovery after being shot on duty in January.

Murph was shot during a domestic disturbance call. Tuesday afternoon, we were able to meet him and his handler — Officer Chad Hudson.

Murph did his job that day, helping take the suspect down, but at some point, that suspect shot the dog. He was quickly rushed to the UC Davis veterinary hospital and began his recovery.

Unfortunately, because of the severity of his injuries, Murph's front leg had to be amputated. He was home a few days later and had his stitches removed just this week.

"It's difficult," Hudson said. "It will be a difficult processs and give him the best life possible."

The department says the plan is to bring Murph back on the force as a detection dog, so he'd be helping officers by sniffing out narcotics.

Luckily, the faithful partner fund at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine paid for the surgery, and the vet staff says Murph is doing great.
