WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A section of West Sacramento was evacuated just before noon after a man called police saying he had found what looked an explosive device, according to West Sacramento police.

According to police, a man was sifting through a dumpster behind a business near West Capitol and Harbor boulevards in West Sacramento when he found a metal canister.  For some reason, he brought the canister to his home in the 700 block of Walnut Street and then called police around 11:30 a.m.

Police determined that it was an active explosive and evacuated ten homes in the immediate area.  They have also told 50-60 families to stay in their homes.

The bomb squad blocked off Walnut Street and sent in a robot to neutralize the explosive device.

West Sacramento police have opened a criminal investigation.  No one has been arrested and no suspects identified.
