Suspect Allegedly Used iPhone To Take Thousands Of Upskirt Photos
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CBS/AP) — A San Diego County man has been charged with using his cellphone to snap thousands of upskirt photos of women shopping in local stores.
Twenty-two-year-old Julio Garcia of Valley Center was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of invasion of privacy and annoying a child.
He remains jailed Friday.
Police in Escondido contend that Garcia used his iPhone to peek under the skirts of women and girls as young as 15 over the past year. About 2,100 images allegedly were found on his phone.
"The very first video that started this whole thing, a boyfriend and his girlfriend and he's within a foot of the boyfriend and a foot of the girlfriend," said Escondido Police Lt. Craig Carter.
Garcia targeted patrons at outlets ranging from gas stations and convenience marts to large retail and pet stores.
In one video, Garcia allegedly snapped photos while waiting in line at an ice cream parlor.
"There was what looked like a 3- or 4-year-old girl next to mom, and he's filming up mom's skirt while they're both waiting for ice cream, said Carter. "Very brazen."
Store surveillance video of a man taking upskirt photos prompted the investigation and police say a partial license plate number helped lead them to Garcia.
