Stockton Police Shoot And Kill Suspect After Chase
STOCKTON (CBS13) - Police have shot and killed a suspect in Stockton.
The shooting happened in the area of Delano Avenue and Calarivo Drive, according to a Stockton Police Department statement.
It started when officers on patrol allegedly saw the suspect beating up a woman near Pershing and Rosemarie. When police went to pull the driver over, the suspect drove off , leading officers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 5 going the wrong way, according to Stockton Police Department Officer Joe Silva.
Police later resumed their chase of the suspect into a neighborhood and used their vehicles to stop the vehicle. He stayed in the vehicle and even accelerated at officers.
"Vehicles can be used as a deadly weapon, just as we saw tonight. We saw this suspect accelerating in the direction of officers, swerving in their direction, trying to hit officers with what turns out to be a stolen vehicle," said Officer Silva.
"I'm pretty sure justice was served. I'm glad it ended...and nobody else got hurt," said Mike Halliwell, a neighbor.
The woman who was allegedly assaulted was taken to the hospital and is doing fine.
Police fired at the suspect and hit him. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He has been identified as 28-year-old Kenneth Garcia, a man who was out on post-release community service for weapons charges.
No officers were injured in the incident.
