Stockton Child Shot By Mother's Gun, But Who Pulled The Trigger?
STOCKTON (CBS13) — An 8-year-old was shot by a gun belonging to her mother, but nobody knows who fired the shot.
Police say someone inside the home unintentionally fired a sawed-off shotgun, hitting an 8-year-old girl in the foot as she played on the floor.
Officers say the girl's mother, Aurora Almaraz, stayed at home while someone else rushed the girl to the hospital for a serious injury.
"It's severe, major damage to her foot," Stockton officer Joseph Silva said. "All she was doing was doing what normal kids do."
When officers arrived at the home, they say the mother refused to cooperate.
"She was giving conflicting statements and would not let officers in her house."
After getting their hands on a search warrant, officers found the sawed-off shotgun belonging to the mother, a handgun and other evidence inside the home.
It's not clear who fired the weapon, or if the shooting happened in front of other children who may have been home at the time.
Officers cuffed the girl's mother on weapon and child endangerment charges.
"We don't understand why that happened to her, kids are supposed to be safe in their own home."
Child Protective Services was called in. The girl is recovering while her mother remains locked up.
