Stepson Arrested After Allegedly Killing Placerville Man

PLACERVILLE (CBS13) – A man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his stepfather in the head during a dispute Sunday, authorities said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department said 69-year-old John Gale Malia Jr. was found wounded but alive after deputies responded to reports of a shooting on the 3000 block of Deer Canyon Road.

Investigators said initial reports indicate the victim was shot in the head by his stepson when an argument turned violent on their property.

Deputies launched a search for the alleged gunman among the many structures and vehicles on the property, and eventually convinced the suspect to surrender.

Malia later died due to his injury. An autopsy is scheduled sometime this week.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was also rushed to the hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
