Stamp Prices Fall For First Time Since 1919

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - For the first time in nearly 100 years, the cost of mailing a letter is a little cheaper.

The price of a regular stamp dropped from $.49 to $.47 on Sunday.  The decrease comes after the U.S. Postal Service was forced to drop a surcharge put in place to help close a huge deficit due to the Great Recession.

The last time stamp prices dropped instead of increased was back in 1919. Back then, the price fell from three to two cents.

USPS says the decrease will cost them around $2 billion in annual revenue.
