High winds knock out power for thousands in South Lake Tahoe overnight

Thousands in the South Lake Tahoe region lost power overnight into Thursday due to high winds.

April began with a spring storm in Northern California that brought snow back to the high country after a stretch of unusually warm and dry weather in March.

The storm also brought strong winds as it moved over the Sierra Nevada.

Liberty Utilities says the high winds impacted some of its equipment by bringing down trees and power lines, leading to widespread outages in South Lake Tahoe. At the peak, about 15,000 customers were without power.

Utility crews are on scene investigating and working to restore service. No estimated time for full restoration has been provided, but about 7,000 customers were still in the dark as of 10:45 a.m.
