Shingle Springs Community, School Rally Around Boys Whose Mom Is Battling Breast Cancer
SHINGLE SPRINGS (CBS13) — A 39-year-old El Dorado County mom is in the hospital fighting cancer, but tonight they Shingle Springs community is rallying around her two sons.
High school junior Cameron Hughes and his 10-year-old brother Chance lead the Ponderosa High football team onto the field as a tribute to their mom, who was too sick to attend Thursday's game.
"It's pretty hard but we just go through it every day, day by day," he said.
Danielle Hughes is in the hospital fighting stage-4 breast cancer.
"It is extremely hard and your heart falls out to them," said head coach Jerry Leath.
So all this month, the school is sporting pink, from the players to the pom-poms, honoring those touched by cancer.
"It is truly amazing what a small town can do and we are very very grateful," said Donna Hughes, the boys' grandmother.
The team rallying around No. 21 as his mom tries to tackle the potentially deadly disease.
"They've actually been visiting my mom and seeing my mom, so they know everything," Cameron said.
"He's doing excellent in school," said family friend Victoria Hernandez," has straight-A's, been able to get to all of his games with all this weight on his shoulders."
The school hopes some good can come from the heartache by teaching kids how to help one another when times are tough.
"I'm just not as afraid and I know I have people there for me," Cameron said.
The players are also planning on going to the hospital and lining up outside in a pink ribbon formation to show support for cancer patients.
