Search Suspended For Gunman Accused Of Wounding Search And Rescue Worker
NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) — Authorities have called off the search in Nevada County for the gunman investigators say shot and wounded a search and rescue volunteer.
Placer County deputies describe the shooting victim, 69-year-old Steve Wolf of Newcastle, as a physically fit, dedicated long-time volunteer of the Placer County search and rescue ground unit.
Wolf is a retired Roseville utilities line worker.
He is recovering at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
Wolf was on the ground team searching for a lost hiker in the most extreme classification of mountain terrain in Nevada County when he was shot in the hip.
His commander says it's the first time a search and rescue volunteer has been shot while helping find someone in the state history.
Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal spoke about the investigation into who would have targeted a search and rescue team.
"Who has an interest in that area," Royal said. "Is it a gold miner? Is it a marijuana grower? Who frequents or has an interest there so we can focus our attention on individuals of interest."
Wolf was helping find missing 75-year-old hiker Timothy Hansston, last seen a week ago.
