The city plans to have all of the meters installed by 2020.

The technology can detect leaks in your home before you know about it. Traditional water meters just generate bills based on monthly readings, but smart meters collect water readings in real time every hour.

With that added information, residents can do more about it. State conservation managers have seen homeowners use 80 fewer gallons a day in some areas.
