Home in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood demolished after fire, explosions

A home in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood was demolished after several people reported explosions when the home caught fire late Wednesday morning.

Around 11:30 a.m., Sacramento firefighters responded to 37th Street in the area of 7th Avenue, finding heavy smoke coming from a single-story home and hearing multiple explosions.

Before crews arrived, the Sacramento Fire Department said there was a very loud explosion that knocked things off the neighbors' walls. A next-door neighbor's home had its windows blown out from either the heat or the explosions.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming from a home along 37th Street in Sacramento's Oak Park.

The explosion also caused the roof to collapse. Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson for the fire department, said the explosion caused pieces of the roof to be thrown onto a neighbor's tile roof, which the tile prevented the home from catching fire.

Sylvia said no injuries were reported and no one was home at the time.

"It was really big," said Maya Espinoza, who lives nearby. "It was really dark, really smoky, black. It just seemed to get bigger and bigger and bigger."

Sylvia said one of the biggest challenges was accessing the house that was surrounded by piles of junk.

After the flames were knocked down, crews used ladders to snake hoses inside to put out any hot spots.

"It's a really nice neighborhood, so it's not foul play, that I could see, because of the fact that we're all friends," said nearby resident Walton Jeffery.

Arson investigators were at the scene and the cause is under investigation.
