Sacramento Man Says He Has World's Largest Edsel Collection
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento man claims he has the largest Edsel collection in the world, and he's looking for someone to buy the old cars.
Jim Koch may be in for some luck, because even though the cars don't run, buyers may be coming to him as the National Edsel Convention rolls into town.
He spent decades accumulating his collection of 100 Edsels. The car was only made between 1958 and 1960, advertised as something special. Ford quickly stopped production when no one bought them.
"They only made 110,000 of them in the whole three-year history," he said.
People thought the car's front grille looked strange.
"Like an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon, a toilet seat, and things like that," he said.
The great failure in American auto manufacturing now as a niche fan club that's meeting in Sacramento this year.
Koch is convinced someone, somewhere will want to buy his collection and restore the cars to greatness.
"They were made to be visible and identifiable from all four sides from a block away," he said.
He says Sacramento County Code Enforcement was threatening to remove the cars, but they're agreed to work with him since the collection is considered historic.
