Roseville Repeals 'Crash Tax'
ROSEVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) -- City leaders voted Wednesday to repeal the controversial "crash tax" that charges a fee to out-of-town drivers who get into an accident within city limits.
The Roseville City Council vote 5-0 in favor of the repeal, which comes on the heels of a state lawmaker's proposal to ban accident fees altogether across the state.
Roseville adopted the measure about two years ago as a way to help offset emergency services costs, but even though dozens of other California cities -- including Sacramento -- have approved similar ideas, the concept is constantly subject to harsh criticism.
Yolo County supervisors have warned they are considering retaliation in the form of a "reverse crash tax" that would only affect residents from cities who have enacted the controversial fee.
A L.A. Times columnist wrote earlier this week that travelers should avoid Sacramento altogether because of the measure.
