Psychologist: Navy Yard Shooter Likely Had 'Storehouse Of Rage'

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Investigators say the motive for the suspect in the Washington, D.C., Navy Yard isn't clear, so CBS13's Ron Jones spoke with a seasoned clinical psychologist for some perspective.

What would drive Aaron Alexis to systematically gun down his victims in cold blood in a shooting like the one that left more than a dozen dead, including the shooter?

"He had a lot of things building up and it overflowed."

Dr. Debra Moore is a clinical psychologist in Carmichael. It's pure speculation, but based on her extensive experience, she believes it could have been festering in the 34-year-old former Navy reservist for months, if not years.

"He most likely had a storehouse of rage from who knows what other events. He may have had a substance-abuse issue, so there may have been a disinhibition."

CBS News is reporting the former Navy petty officer was released for disciplinary problems.

As horrifying details of the shootings unfold on television and on the Internet, Moore offers the following advice to parents.

"I think you protect your children and you shelter your children don't let them see TV news or magazines. They'll learn about it at school but don't overexpose them especially the little ones."
