Proposed Sacramento Transit Rules Target Smells, Clothes And Sleeping

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Ongoing complaints about public transportation have been plaguing local transit systems for years, prompting four new proposed rules to address them.

The complaints aren't new, but for some riders, they have no other choice but to deal with them.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District operates 67 bus routes and about 40 miles of light rail—the latter has an average daily ridership of around 50,000 people.

  • One rule will require riders to be fully clothed above and below the waist, including footwear with some kind of sole.
  • Also, unbearable smells won't be tolerated.
  • If you're planning on sleeping, make it just a nap, because there will be no long-term sleeping allowed.
  • And finally, bring headphones if you plan on listening to music, because you can't play any audible sound.

Once RT personnel is notified that someone is not abiding by the rules, then they will be asked to leave.

Some people feel the rules may be unfairly targeting the homeless who don't have access to bathe.

The board will decide on the rules on Monday, but if they get a green light, they will be implemented immediately.
