Police Move In To Move Out Occupy Farm Protesters

ALBANY (CBS13)— Police are rounding up an encampment of activist farmers in Albany who have been occupying a 10-acre parcel of land, owned by UC, since Earth Day nearly three weeks ago.

Several dozen officers in riot gear began moving in Monday morning to move the protesters. So far, at least nine people have been detained by police.

Occupy the Farm started planting crops on UC Berkeley's Gill Tract to turn it into a community garden. However, UC Berkeley uses the land for agricultural research.

The protesters have been warned repeatedly to clear out. University officials say research is scheduled to start this wee, and they'll take whatever action is necessary to allow faculty to access the land and continue their work.

"We're going to take the steps that are necessary to honor our commitment to the research. We'll just have to wait and see how the folks who are currently occupying our property respond."
