Police Blow Up Pipe Bombs During Contra Costa Drug Raid

PACHECO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say police found and detonated several pipe bombs during a drug raid at a storage facility in Pacheco.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's office says members of the narcotics enforcement team conducted the raid at Affordable Storage around noon Tuesday.

Facility manager Les Stevens told the Contra Costa Times that when officers opened a 10-by-15-foot unit they found a man and woman inside and took them into custody.

Stevens says the officers then saw the pipe bombs, evacuated the facility and called the Walnut Creek police bomb squad.

Four of the devices were detonated harmlessly around 5:30 p.m., but Interstate 680 was shut down in both directions several times during the police action.
