Parents Getting Message On Vaccines In Placer County As More Protect Children From Measles

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — Pediatricians say parents in an area with a reportedly high rate of unvaccinated children are starting to get the message.

Elias Hernandez is a happy, healthy 4-year-old who is even more excited he just got his measles shot over with.

His parents didn't think twice about getting him vaccinated, especially after the measles outbreak at Disneyland six weeks ago.

Their family pediatrician, Dr. Ken Hempstead, is also the coordinator of the vaccination program at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Roseville.

"We're definitely seeing people coming in who had not considered vaccinating before," he said.

The doctor says he's seeing parents who recently belonged to anti-vaccine groups or so-called "clusters" around Placer COunty.

A recent Kaiser study showed more than a quarter of kindergartens in California have measles-immunization rates that are below the 92 percent rate suggested safe by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. That included parts of Roseville.
