Oikos University Nursing Program Downgraded

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The nursing program at the California Christian college where a gunman killed seven people has been placed on a form of probation.

The state Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians voted on Friday to shift approval of the program at Oikos University to provisional status.

That means the Oakland school must show progress towards raising its passing rates on nursing exams and fix other problems or risk losing state approval of its nursing program.

Schools should earn passing rates within 10 points of the state average, which was 75 percent last year. Oikos' rate was 41 percent in 2011 and 58 percent in 2010.

The nursing program's director, Ellen Cervellon, says the school is improving and will regain full approval.

A gunman shot and killed six nursing students and a secretary at the school on April 2.
