NTSB: Amtrak Horn Sounded Before Crash

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Federal officials investigating a deadly Amtrak crash in Nevada say the engineer sounded the horn four times before a truck slammed into the train about 70 miles east of Reno.

Officials for the National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday they spent five days at the scene last month conducting tests and gathering data to help determine the cause of the June 24 crash that killed the truck driver and five people on the train.

John Davis Trucking of Battle Mountain provided a truck and two trailers like the ones in the accident to test the brakes and recreate the circumstances at the time of the crash.

Based on the re-enactment and original recordings, NTSB officials hope to calculate the distance between the truck and the crossing during the horn blasts.
