More Eyes Looking Into 81-Year-Old's Frightful Jump

YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) - It's not just the Federal Aviation Administration that is looking into an 81-year-old grandmother's death-defying jump.

CBS13 learned Tuesday that the U.S. Parachute Association is now investigating.

The owner of Skydancing Skydiving of Davis told us he never would have let Laverne Everett on one of his planes with the harness fitted improperly.

"There was no excuse for it," Ray Farrell said.

Farrell says that much is obvious just by watching the viral video of the jump that occurred last May.

"The harness was not adjusted properly," he said.

The adventurous 81-year-old Everett described the harrowing leap first to CBS13 last week after video of the jump was posted on YouTube. Now, the FAA and the U.S. Attorney's Office want to hear her story.

"The director of safety for the U.S. Parachute Association told us his board of directors will investigate as well.

"It really didn't hit home until you see the video, how close she came to actually coming out of the harness," Jim Crouch said.

Farrell says that's the direct result of human error in not following strict safety guidelines.

"It's bad for the sport in general because people that don't know about the sport think this is what goes on, and that's not true," Farrell said

Acampo Parachute Center, the company Laverne jumped with, is not a member of the U.S. Parachute Association and isn't required to follow its safety rules.

But with nearly a million dollars worth of fines from the FAA over the years, and now the video of Laverne's near fatal accident, the Lodi business is facing a free fall.
