More Educators May Join Lawsuit Against State Over School Funding Cuts
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Educators throughout California say they're outraged that the state is cutting some $400 million to schools as of Jan. 1, including the complete elimination of funds for busing.
Representatives of the California School Boards Association and Association of California School Administrators told a news conference Wednesday they are considering joining a lawsuit that was to be filed Wednesday by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction, says he will push for a tax to fund public education to be put on the November ballot.
Dennis Meyers of the school boards association says low income districts will be particularly hard hit by the loss of busing funds. He says such funds are key for special needs students and rural children.
