Modesto man faces 700 years to life for 2023 crime spree, shootout with deputies

A Modesto man was convicted for getting into a shootout with deputies after going on a crime spree in 2023, the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office said on Sunday.

Jason Benson Dingler, 45, of Modesto, was convicted on five counts of attempted premeditated murder of a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, carjacking, robbery and other charges.

The DA said Dingler admitted to having at least two other serious felonies, which allowed for California's three-strike law to be used.

He faces 700 years to life in prison and will be sentenced on May 1.

The DA said that on Sept. 22, 2023, Dingler began his crime spree by breaking into a home and taking a gun; he then carjacked someone, and drove to a convenience store, which he robbed at gunpoint.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies spotted Dingler in the stolen car and tried to pull him over, but he refused to stop and led them on a chase. The DA said he eventually crashed and ran into an orchard near Patterson.

According to the DA, Dingler shot at deputies while they searched for him in the orchard. The DA said the shootout ended when Dingler was shot while trying to approach deputies while still armed with a gun.

No deputies were injured.
