Modesto crash near Eisenhut Elementary hospitalizes 3 students, woman

Three Eisenhut Elementary School students and a woman were hospitalized Thursday morning after being hit by a vehicle while walking near the Modesto campus.

Modesto police said the three children were flown to hospitals for treatment, while the woman was taken by ambulance. Their conditions have not been released.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. at the crosswalk of Janet and Sheldon drives, according to Stanislaus Union School District officials.

District officials said the children were walking to school when the crash happened. Eisenhut Elementary was not placed on lockdown, but families were asked to avoid Sheldon Drive while police remained in the area.

Counselors and mental health support teams were brought to campus Thursday and will remain available in the coming days.

"Right now, our focus is entirely on supporting our students, staff, and families," Superintendent Shannon Sanford said in a message to district families.

Police officers will also have an increased presence around the school over the next couple of weeks to monitor traffic, district officials said.

Modesto police's Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation and is looking for any possible video of what happened.

No other details about what led up to the crash have been released.
