MLS Owners Approve 4 Team Expansion Plan, Improving Sacramento's Chances

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Sacramento is one big step closer to earning a Major League Soccer franchise.

Saturday, MLS owners approved expanding the number of franchises to 28 - adding possibly four new teams.

This past week week, Sacramento City Council approved a term sheet for an MLS stadium in the old Railyards location.

In a statement, MLS revealed it had not determined the timeline voting in the additional franchises.

"There is no shortage of demand for MLS expansion teams and we believe the opportunity exists to grow beyond our current plans," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement.  "We will evaluate how to grow the league to 28 teams and establish a process and timeline for future expansion."

League owners - who are meeting in Columbus, Ohio for talks - also announced their support for a stadium in Miami. Soccer star David Beckham has been behind the Miami push.
