Midtown Sacramento Vandals Damage Disabled Woman's Van

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Vandals who broke into a disabled woman's van robbed her of her independence, but they didn't break her of her spirit.

Kim Lathrop does everything else a young woman does. She goes out, she plays with her dogs, and she goes to school.

But some things like writing and turning off the lights are different because Lathrop was born without any limbs.

"I love that I am independent and live on my own," she said.

She's been living in her Midtown apartment for more than a year now.

"Everyone just assumes I'm taken care of with 24-hour care a day," she said.

A caregiver helps her for half of the day, driving her to school and helping get things situated for when she's alone. She lives off of disability, and besides her chair, her van is the only way she can get around.

But twice in the past six weeks, Lathrop's van was ransacked. Then she faced another setback on Wednesday.

"The door was jammed, so the ramp wouldn't fold out," she said.

Her caregiver, Adam, couldn't drive the van, because the ramp was scraping on the ground.

"I felt really claustrophobic because at first we didn't know how to get out of my car," Lathrop said.

The van is temporarily fixed, but it doesn't mean the problem won't happen again.

It's not stopping Lathrop though. She's still going to school and hoping she can save the money to get her van permanently fixed.
