Woman Hurt, Man Shot At Sacramento Apartment Complex

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A woman in her 70s opened her door to a woman she thought needed her help Sunday night, but instead two men reportedly forced their way in and pepper sprayed her before turning their weapon on another victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The elderly woman, named Gentana, is the landlord of a group of four-plexes on Carro Drive off of Northrop Avenue in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento.

Deputies were called to Gentana's apartment around 6:30 p.m. after she opened her door to a woman asking for help and ended up the victim of a violent home invasion.

"There is some indication that she may have been restrained in the house," Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Lt. Philip Massa said.

But she wasn't the only victim. A maintenance worker named Dennis showed up at her door while the home invasion was still in progress and the suspects pistol-whipped him before dragging him inside the apartment, Ramos said.

"The victim with the gunshot wound interrupted it unbeknownst to him, and the suspects as they were fleeing from the house shot him," Massa said.

The maintenance worker was shot in the face at was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, but he's expected to recover.

Dennis's brother arrived at the scene upset because he says this isn't the first time his brother's job has put him in the line of fire.

"I guess she had money on her or something," the man said. "This ain't the first time this happened. He ain't got hurt before, but they've tried to rob her before."

Investigators say as of now, there's no indication either victim knew the suspects. Another reminder not to open your door to a stranger, male or female, Massa reminded.

"Get as much information from people as to what they need," he said. "You keep your door secure, make a phone call to the police or sheriff's department and we'll sort out what people need at the door."
