K9 Officer Takes Down Man Suspected Of Stealing Christmas Presents

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A man accused of stealing a stash of Christmas presents was taken down by a Sacramento Police K9 officer, according to Sacramento Police.

The suspect allegedly broke into a home on D Street around 5:30 this morning.

"I'm kind of stunned about this. It's seems sad that something like that has to happen," said Peter whose building was targeted. He owns the two-story home on McKinley Park; renting out the bottom floor and using the top as an office. He was also storing his wife's Christmas presents there.

The suspect used a crowbar to break a window on the upper floor. He left with a garbage bag full of presents. The people renting the bottom floor of the home saw the thief leave and called police.

As police arrived to investigate, the suspect was spotted running through an alley.

"It looked like he had a bag of presents. A big plastic bag that appeared to have Christmas presents in it," said Sacramento Police Sgt. Bob Huff.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area of McKinley Park to search for the suspect telling residents to say inside.

"And then I heard the commotion in the backyard. The police officer said lock your doors, stay inside and keep your dogs inside," one neighbor told CBS13's Nick Janes.

Officers say that "commotion" is what gave the suspect away. They could hear him jumping over backyard fences and running through the yards. Once they pinned him down to one home, a K9 officer was sent in. A few minutes later, the suspect was brought out on a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.

Police say the suspect's injuries are minor. He will be booked into the County Jail after being treated at the hospital.

Police were only able to recover about half the presents.
