Husband Accused Of Driving With Wife On Hood Confesses In Court
MANTECA (CBS13) -- There was commotion in the courtroom on Thursday as the husband accused of driving 40 miles with his wife on the hood of his van says he did it, which is when the San Joaquin County judge put a stop to things, and postponed the hearing.
"I did that to my wife, I did that to my wife," said Christopher Carroll.
Carroll is charged with attempted murder and abuse stemming from an attack that ended with Carroll taking off in his minivan as his wife was holding onto the hood in horror.
Cops say Carroll took his wife on a high speed ride from Manteca to Pleasanton as she clung to the car and somehow survived.
After Carroll confessed in court, the judge told him his charges carry life in prison.
"I've refused counsel already," said Carroll. "I just want to tell the truth."
We now know Carroll's bizarre behavior began the day before the attack when police arrested him for trying to swim in his dumpster. Carroll also told cops that he wanted to commit suicide.
"His behavior was abnormal, we're thinking drugs or alcohol was involved," said Officer Rex Osborn, Manteca Police Department.
Carroll was taken to jail and then released.
Then, officers say his wife took him to the hospital, and it wasn't long before Carroll started the family feud that landed him behind bars and in front of the judge.
"I did all of those your honor," Carroll said.
Carroll's bizarre behavior prompted a judge to suspend the hearing, a competency hearing for next week.
Carroll is being held without bail.
