South Sac Home Under Renovation Goes Up In Flames

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – It was suppose to be a new home for a new year, but an overnight fire has delayed those dreams for a local family.

It was fire trucks instead of moving trucks in front of a recently purchased south Sacramento home on Pomegranate Street Monday morning.

Neighbors tell CBS13 the new owners were renovating the house from top to bottom with plans of moving into the home in just a few days.

"A young family was supposed to move out of their place by the 28th and move into this new house here on the 1st," said neighbor Calvin Elam.

Firefighters say flames were tearing through second story and moved into the attic. They had to cut bars away from the windows to gain access.

The two-alarm fire caused the roof to collapse. No one was hurt, but the home is a complete loss.

"Yeah, we were dispatched by the fire department to make sure nobody breaks into it," said contractor Jeff Everett, who was boarding up windows. "It's horrible, really unfortunate."

The new homeowners, who have yet to see the burned-out remains of the home, were installing fresh drywall, new carpets and appliances. It's unclear if they plan to rebuild or walk away. Neighbors say they were still in Los Angeles for Christmas.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
