High-Speed Chase Suspect Shot Multiple Times Expected To Survive
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - More than 20 officers were on the scene of a shooting Sunday morning in Sacramento following a high-speed chase.
At 1:30 a.m. a CHP officer tried to pull over Bill Stevens, 51, in the area of Howe Avenue and Delma Way after he was spotted driving erratically, according to Sacramento Police. When he refused, Sacramento County sheriff's deputies and Sacramento police officers were called in to help. A CHP officer stopped Stevens using a PIT maneuver, and as deputies approached Stevens' vehicle, he drove toward them. The deputies jumped out of the way and fired their guns at Stevens, hitting him multiple times.
Despite his injuries, Stevens was able to drive for several blocks before his car finally stalled. Deputies shot Stevens with a stun gun and took him into custody.
It was a frightening scene for nearby residents when they heard the flurry of gunshots.
Neighbors React To Shooting
"I checked all the doors and I have small children; they heard the sirens and were concerned," said one neighbor who didn't want to be named. "It would take a stick of dynamite to get through this door. I don't have a gun but I wish I had one."
Hours after the incident, investigators were still on the scene scouring the area for evidence. Police say Stevens put officers and citizens at risk.
"The suspect obviously had no regard for public safety as he was going in and out of these different neighborhoods," said an officer.
One officer was injured during the chase when the he lost control of his car and hit a tree.
No bystanders were injured.
Stevens is expected to survive.
