Hayward Police Sergeant Shot During Traffic Stop Dies
HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) - A San Francisco Bay Area police sergeant was shot during a traffic stop has died, according to reports.
Hayward Police Lt. Eric Krimm Wednesday morning at first declined to release the condition of the sergeant. However, sources later told KPIX-TV that the officer had died.
Krimm said no arrests have been made.
The incident began at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday when the sergeant tried to stop a white Chevrolet pickup that was swerving on the road.
The driver stopped and there was a confrontation. Further details were not released.
Another officer reported that shots had been fired and an officer was injured.
The sergeant was taken to a hospital east of San Francisco. He has been identified as Sgt. Scott Lunger, a 15-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department.
Police later discovered a truck in Oakland with bullet holes. It matches a description of the truck involved in the incident. More details are expected later Wednesday.
